PORT AUSTIN MUSIC UPDATE
(as of July 10, 2016)
The website portaustinmusic.com was initially created in early 2016 to introduce and provide information on the Port Austin Porch Fest, a musical event which ultimately took place in late June. Even though Porch Fest has come and gone for this year, the website will remain, and anyone in the Port Austin, upper Thumb area promoting an upcoming musical event is invited to get out word about it on this site. For information, contact Dennis Hafeli at email@example.com.
The first-ever Port Austin Porch Fest, held on Saturday, June 25, proved to be a rousing success, with 35 different musical groups performing on 24 different porches over a four hour span. Hundreds of smiling-faced spectators roamed the streets, some taking in as many performances as they could, and others selecting a favorite performer or two who captured their attention throughout. Porch providers, entertainers, and spectators shared very favorable comments with Porch Fest chairman Dennis Hafeli and his right hand aide, Peggy Miller. The two of them have created an evaluation form which is now posted on the website, portaustinmusic.com. They sincerely hope that as many people as possible will submit constructive feedback on the form so that next year's event (and it seems highly likely that it will return in 2017) will be even better in some ways.
The Spring Street Boys have been a musical fixture in Port Austin for several years, making their first-ever appearance at the initial Port Austin Farmers Market on Memorial Day weekend of 2005. Port Austin home owner Dennis Hafeli invited members of a band with whom he had performed in the Detroit area for several decades to join him for events up here, and they have enthusiastically accepted the invitations ever since,. Besides Hafeli, steady members have included guitarist Greg Ganz, keyboard and bass player Art Dries, and Hafeli's brother Alan, who plays guitar and harmonica. There have been several drummers, with Harpo Costello and Jim Nosakowski performing most frequently. A real asset to the group and their musical repertoire over the past several years has been long-time Port Austin guitarist Arnie Besonen, whose country sound has blended together well with the band's typical oldies style.
The Spring Street Boys have quite a busy schedule in the Thumb area for the remainder of the summer.
